A Five Step Guide to Online Shopping

Step 1: “Setting Up an Account”

Look for the characters 免费注册(free registration) at the top-left of the Taobao homepage. Add a Chinese phone number and a password, make sure you can remember it. A few clicks later, you are officially a member of Taobao.

Step 2: “Adding Money to Your Account”

Unlike most online shopping websites, where you simply key in a credit card number. Taobao uses Alipay. You need to connect an Alipay account to your bank account. That way you can recharge money whenever you want.

Step 3: “Knowing Where to Buy”

With thousands of stores on Taobao, it can be difficult to know who is a good seller. The easy way is to check the symbols -- those little hearts, diamonds, and crowns! The greater the number of symbols, the better the seller is.

Step 4: “Chatting It Up”

If you have questions about the product, sizing or shipping, you can chat with the shop owner. Shop owners will usually call you 亲 (dear). So don’t be confused when you see this.

Step 5: “The Final Step - Payment”

You’ve made it to the final step! Now you can click “buy now”. Then you must select your shipping option. The most typical is the 10RMB 快递(delivery). Set up a shipping address and you are done!

6.    Quiz activity based on the material and extensional understanding.

7.    Language use. (introduction of online-shopping procedures).

8.    Talk and find out both advantage and disadvantage of online shopping.

9.    Discussion about online shopping experience (optional).
